How Do Slip and Fall Accidents Occur?

Most of us have taken a tumble at one point or another. Sometimes slipping is the unfortunate result of conditions beyond our control. Other times, someone’s negligence is the cause. Our experienced attorneys will let you know if you have a  slip and fall claim  after discussing the situation with you in a consultation.

Some of the most common causes of slip and falls include:

  • Slippery floors in retail stores, businesses, grocery stores, malls, etc.
  • Trip hazards, such as cords, uneven flooring, torn carpeting, damaged floor surfaces, etc.
  • Snowy, icy, or flooded walkways, stairwells, tunnels, and pathways
  • Inadequate lighting or broken lights that haven’t been repaired
  • Missing, wobbly, or broken railing
  • Potholes or otherwise damaged pavement, parking lots, or sidewalks
  • Broken or loose steps in a stairway

The tricky part of slip and fall injuries is determining whether someone is liable for the accident that injured you. It’s not enough that a parking lot was snowy and ice packed and you fell down. In addition to slipping, someone must be legally responsible.

Our experienced  personal injury attorneys  are able to determine if someone is accountable for the conditions that injured you. We will investigate your claim, looking for the cause of the slip and fall, and identifying whether someone’s negligence led to those conditions. Examples of liable parties in a slip and fall claim include:

  • Landlords
  • Maintenance companies
  • Security companies
  • Retailers
  • Property managers

Proving negligence in these cases can be tricky. You’ll need an experienced attorney on your side. If a pipe burst near a walkway and the water later froze, causing dangerous slippery conditions, it’s not enough to simply show those were the conditions. It must be shown that someone was legally responsible for fixing the burst pipe, and that the person responsible had plenty of notice and still did not attend to the repair in a timely manner. Those are the types of situations in which someone may be accountable for injuries that result.
