Remember These Tips for Safer Driving in 2022

A New Year is upon us! It’s important to stick to those New Year’s resolutions. If we may suggest one area for all motorists to improve upon, it would be safe driving. We’ve seen just how devastating car accidents are and we want everyone to stay safe. Follow these tips:

  • Eliminate distractions. Make 2022 the year you finally eliminate all the distractions possible when you’re behind the steering wheel. That means keeping your phone out of sight. Turn off the sound and notifications to prevent temptation. But distractions go beyond the phone as well. It’s easy to get lost in a conversation. Make sure that the task at hand is your number one priority.
  • Implement the 3 second rule. It’s rare to see adequate following distance these days, but it’s so important. Leaving 3-4 seconds of following distance between you and the vehicle in front of you will reduce your risk of a rear-end collision. The 3 second cushion usually provides enough time for someone to react to unexpected situations on the road ahead. To utilize this rule, pick a marker like a mileage sign. When the vehicle in front passes the marker, count the seconds it takes before you reach and pass the marker. It should be at least 3 seconds in between.
  • Don’t forget the basics. Obey the speed limit. Use your turn signals. Yield the right of way. Stop at red lights. Although these rules seem so obvious, motorists ignore them every second of every day. But following the rules could prevent you from getting in a crash that injures yourself and others.

Although you can never eliminate the risk of a crash, you can reduce your crash risk with the rules above. We wish you and your family a safe, happy, and healthy 2022!
