What to Do if You Face Discrimination at Work

In the United States, there are several laws and legal precedents that protect employees from employment discrimination. Victims are often too scared to file a claim in fear of retaliation from their employer or the employee discriminating against them. If you think you have a valid discrimination claim, one of our employment law attorneys can help.

Here are a few steps you should take if you experience discrimination at work:

  • Make sure your employer displays a poster notifying you of your rights. The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) requires all businesses to display the rights of employees so that they are visible. This poster is often on the wall in a break room. It will tell you how much time you have tofile a claim and how to report it. If your employer refuses to display these rights, you should notify the EEOC of the violation.
  • Document any discrimination you experience at work. Gather all the evidence you have regarding the incident. This can include emails, letters, notes, and more. Our employment law attorneys can help you determine what types of evidence will bolster your claim.
  • File an employee discrimination report as soon as possible. It is best to file your claim within 180 days after the incident. In addition, if your employer fires you or retaliates after you file a claim with the EEOC, you have a strong case and should seek the assistance of our lawyers immediately.
