When Slip and Fall Injuries are Really Serious

November 30, 2020 by McPhillips, Fitzgerald & Cullum, LLP

Slip and fall injuries can be quite severe. With winter around the corner in New York, and Florida weather turning wet and rainy, the time seems right to revisit some of the issues surrounding a serious tumble. Consider the catastrophic trauma that is possible when you lose your footing:

  • Broken bones
  • Compound fractures
  • Spinal cord trauma
  • Brain injury
  • Torn ligaments
  • Tendon injuries
  • Broken wrists or fingers
  • Twisted or broken ankles
  • Broken collarbone
  • Neck trauma

These injuries make it difficult to go to work and get around. You may have to be in the hospital for a while, and then on bed rest at home. You may be in pain and unable to spend quality time with your family while you are recovering. For older adults, a bad fall can often be the catalyst that begins the transition from living independently to moving into an assisted living facility.

If your slip and fall can be linked to someone else’s negligence, then you may be eligible to pursue maximum compensation with the help of our attorneys. Examples of negligence that often arise in slip and fall cases include:

  • Wet floors in retail locations
  • Broken pipes leaking onto a walkway or sidewalk
  • Uneven, damaged flooring
  • Broken, damaged sidewalks
  • Damaged carpeting
  • Inadequate lighting
  • Construction equipment left behind in public walkways
  • Cables left trailing across walking surfaces
  • Improperly designed stairs or walkways
  • Lack of hand railing

It takes an experienced attorney to determine if someone is at fault. It depends on many factors, including the location, your relationship to the location (trespassing, shopping, work-related, etc.) and whether the responsible party had adequate time to repair the issue before the fall occurred. Rely on us for answers and to investigate your claim thoroughly.
