The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) reports that 4,988 fatal crashes in 2020 involved at least one large truck or bus; 2020 is the latest year for which complete statistics are available. This is a three percent decline in fatal truck accidents from the year before, but 2020 still came in as the third most deadly year for truck accidents since 2011.
FMCSA states that fatal truck accidents steadily declined from 2005 to 2009. However, between 2010 and 2020, these events increased by 31 percent. This is a clear indication that greater caution around large trucks is essential.
Driving Safely Around Trucks
The best way to avoid being involved in a truck accident is to practice safe driving around large trucks. Truck drivers have significant blind spots in front of, behind, and on both sides of their vehicles. If you cannot see the driver in the side mirrors, they cannot see you. So always stay out of blind spots.
Give trucks space. Trucks have a longer stopping distance, especially at highway speeds, and they need more room to turn. Be patient around trucks, giving them the time and space they need to maneuver safely.
And, as always, practice common sense driving: pay attention, avoid intoxication, drive courteously (avoid tailgating, erratic lane changes, and similarly aggressive behaviors), and only pass when you have sufficient room.
